Natalia Pietrulewicz
Over the course of 15+ years of my adult life I did whatever I could to not be an artist: I was a philosopher, a logicians, a scholar, a cognitive scientists and finally a psychotherapist - to name just a few. Neither of those activities provided me with the way to ask questions and tell stories the way I feel I need to. Neither have saved me from finally taking the official artistic path. Yet, all of them fed me with knowledge and experiences that now fuel my art. As did all the people I met on my way.
Currently, I study painting at the University of Zielona Góra. Finally. Home.
I work with themes of belonging, home, and connection: to place, to other people, to nature and to ourselves. I am attracted by the fragile balance between participation and solitude. This is why what I call in-betweeness interest me so much.
I was born in western Poland, in a region where most people are descendants of those resettled after World War II. Our families taught us how to adapt and grow, but not necessarily how to take deep root. We inherited buildings and landscapes from those who lived here before us, yet their stories, rituals, and history are not entirely ours. This sense of displacement shapes my work and questions I keep returning to: What does it mean to belong? Can we feel connected to nature and what-comes-after-us and truly care for it if we don’t feel we belong to the land? What does “home” mean, and what obligations and privileges come with calling a place home?
Returning to my hometown after years in Warsaw made me more aware of what is inherited, what is chosen and what is true.
I work across different media: painting, photography, installation, object, participatory art and performance - often using natural materials like wood, tow, or (paper) thread and linen.
Recently, I travelled to Finnmark, where I encountered Sámi culture and landscape — and that experience deeply shaped how I think about identity, nature, and connection. My hope is to make more such trips.
I am quite educated and quite experience psychotherapist, in training to be an art-therapist, but most importantly I am a social soul - that's why you'd be able to see me giving workshops or working in an area of art therapy.
